Exhibition & Artist Talk with Laurent Grasso

SCAD Atlanta, in partnership with France-Atlanta, presents a solo exhibition by Laurent Grasso.

For this exhibition Grasso focused on his interest in observation, control and surveillance in his film “On Air,” which features a falcon fitted with a micro camera that films while flying over United Arab Emirates’ lunar-like landscapes. This transforms a traditional form of hunting into an archaic spying tool, evoking a living and unidentifiable drone.

Grasso’s films, installations and sculptures speculate on the psychological consequences of science and technology and warn us of what may still lie ahead.

Following the lecture, guests were invited to visit the exhibition "On Air".

Laurent Grasso by Jennifer West John

Laurent Grasso’s work has been exhibited extensively worldwide, particularly in Europe and the United States, notably in solo exhibitions at the MACM (Montréal,Canada in 2013), the Jeu de Paume (Paris, France, 2012), the Bass Museum of Art (Miami Beach, FL, USA, 2011), the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris, France, 2009) and the Saint Louis Art Museum (Saint Louis,MO, USA, 2010). Grasso’s work has also been included in many international biennales including Gwangju 9th (South Korea, 2012), Manifesta 8 (Cartagena / Murcia, Spain,2010), Sharjah (United Arab Emirates, 2009), Moscow (Russia, 2009) and Busan(South Korea, 2004 and 2006). Grasso was awarded the Marcel Duchamp Prize in 2008 and is the subject of major monographs as Uraniborg (2012), Future Archæology (2012) and Laurent Grasso : The Black Body Radiation published by Les Presses du Réel. Three other solo catalogues based on his work have also been published. Additonally, Grasso has created several installations in the public space. His neon project, Infinite Light, was installed in 2008 on the exterior of the Hunter College Lexington Avenue pedestrian walkway in New York. The following year, the artist designed, Nomiya, an architectural project which was situated on the roof top of the Palais de Tokyo in Paris from 2009 – 2011. This project, which combined sculpture and functionality, created an international attraction out of a glass cube. In 2010, his neon Memories of the Future was acquired by the Leeum Samsung Museum in Seoul, South Korea. Laurent Grasso (1972) lives and works between Paris and New York. He is represented by Galerie Valentin in Paris, Sean Kelly Gallery in New York and Edouard Malingue Gallery in Hong Kong.
